Start of School Dates

Here are important dates for the start of the 2022-23 school year. (Don’t worry…we still have lots of summer break left to enjoy.)

Free Summer Meal Program

Learning doesn’t end when school lets out, and neither does children’s need for good nutrition. The Summer Meal Program provides free, nutritious meals to help children get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow. Breakfast and lunch will be served at Lake Hills Elementary and Sammamish High Schools. They must be consumed on-site. No paperwork or ID required.

Saying Our Good-byes

A large number of our NHES staff are retiring, being transferred to other district programs, or leaving to pursue new opportunities at the end of this school year. Please take a moment to thank these dedicated professionals for their service to our community.

Nurse Cori Ponte has been the school nurse at Newport Heights for 8 years, and she was a Dolphin parent before that! The district has decided to transfer her to Odle Middle School due to the overall good of the district. Nurse Cori’s extensive knowledge of the needs of our more medically fragile students in the Pacific Program will be irreplaceable and her time and attention to all students will be missed very deeply.

Diane Nakamichi has been a teacher at Newport Heights for 10 years! She has decided to retire to spend more time with her beloved garden...and family. Please join us in congratulating her on a career packed full of educating young minds. She has made a bigger impact on our community than we know. Diane will be truly missed, but we wish her the best in retirement.
Layne Harris has been part of the Newport Heights community for the last 7 years as a 3rd grade teacher, 4th grade teacher, and now as the Instructional Technology and Curriculum Leader. The district has decided to transfer her to another school to teach 3rd grade; she will be greatly missed in our community!

Lindsay Lile has been a teacher at Newport Heights for 7 years! Wow! She has accepted a position at Cherry Crest Elementary in the Advanced Learning Program. Cherry Crest's gain is definitely our loss! We wish you all the best in this new adventure!

Maggie Mosholder has been the school counselor at Newport Heights for 8 years! She has been an incredibly valuable asset to our school and even more so as we try to navigate student well-being through this pandemic. The district has decided to transfer her to another school due to the overall good of the district. Thank you, Maggie, for caring for our children for so many years. Thank you for helping them through tears, and fears and all the other big emotions of childhood. We will miss your calming presence in our community!

Meggan Jung has been a psychologist with the district for 23 years the last 7 of which were at Newport Heights! That's a long time! Parents and colleagues describe Meggan as compassionate, kind, dedicated, hard-working and a true advocate for children. The district has decided to transfer her to another school due to the overall good of the district. We wish you the best, but will truly miss all you've done for our community and children!

Sydney Calderwood, one of our PACIFIC teachers, has been transferred to Bennet Elementary where she will teach 4th grade next year.

Resource Room teacher, Eric Sarmiento, is leaving Newport Heights to pursue a psychologist internship.

Our Occupational Therapist (OT), Sam Trout, is moving south to the Olympia area.

NHES principal, Jane Knopf-Stover, is leaving the district. She has accepted a position as Director of Operations at Coding for Kids.

A number of our paraeducators are also leaving Newport Heights. Michele Green, Holly Holt, and Diane Ricci are retiring after many years of service in the district. Chisaki Niiyama is transitioning to substituting in order to spend more time with her family. Vicki Premo (GSA) is leaving to pursue new opportunities.
